What is "Residence Card"?
The Residence Card is an identification card issued by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan to foreign nationals who are authorized to stay in Japan for a mid- to long-term period (more than three months). On the front side, it contains essential personal information such as the holder’s name, date of birth, sex, nationality or region, address, residence status, period of stay, and whether employment is permitted. A photograph of the holder is also included for identification. On the reverse side, updates such as changes of address or permissions for activities outside the authorized status are recorded.
Carrying the Residence Card at all times is legally required, and it must be presented promptly when requested by police officers or immigration officials. Beyond serving as a legal document, it is also widely used in daily life as an official form of identification, for example, when opening a bank account, signing an employment contract, or applying for a mobile phone contract.
The system was introduced in 2012, replacing the former Alien Registration Certificate. The card is equipped with an IC chip, which strengthens measures against forgery and misuse. Therefore, the Residence Card is not merely an ID but a vital legal document that certifies a foreign resident’s immigration status and authorized period of stay in Japan.
