Summary
Immigration has become a major political issue in New Zealand ahead of the 2026 general election. Net migration fell sharply from a record 127,400 in 2023 to 17,600 in the year ending June 2026. Meanwhile, more New Zealanders are leaving, particularly for Australia, attracted by higher wages and better employment opportunities.

In August 2026, the National Party-led government introduced new residency pathways to attract and retain skilled migrants by easing requirements and placing greater emphasis on New Zealand work experience and qualifications. However, coalition partner New Zealand First strongly opposed the reforms, advocating tighter immigration controls.

Although the new policies may improve skilled migrant recruitment and retention, they do not address the underlying economic disparities with Australia. The reforms also reflect the National Party’s efforts to distinguish its pro-immigration position from New Zealand First’s nationalist stance ahead of the election.
