Summary
Wealthy Americans make up the largest share of applicants for New Zealand’s “golden visa,” drawn by the country’s natural environment, entrepreneurial culture, and, in some cases, a desire to distance themselves from the Trump administration.

After major rule changes in April 2025—such as lower investment thresholds, removal of English requirements, and shorter residency obligations—applications surged to 573, representing 1,833 people, compared with just 116 applications in the previous two and a half years. About 40% of applicants are from the United States, followed by China and Hong Kong.

The visa has two main categories: the “growth” option requiring a NZ$5 million investment over three years, and the “balanced” option requiring NZ$10 million over five years. The previous scheme required NZ$15 million.

Many investors see the visa as both a lifestyle opportunity and a smart investment, particularly in sectors such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and biotechnology. However, the program remains controversial, especially regarding foreign influence on the housing market. Under current rules, visa holders may only buy homes worth more than NZ$5 million.

The scheme has already generated about NZ$3.39 billion in investment, and the government says it is vital for boosting productivity, creating jobs, and helping businesses grow.
