Summary: A Gwangju Immigration Office employee is suspected of receiving information about foreign delivery workers allegedly working illegally at rival companies in exchange for sparing a local delivery agency from enforcement. A recorded phone call reportedly shows the agency owner asking the official to leave one of its workers alone while offering information on other foreign workers to help meet enforcement targets.

South Korea intensified its crackdown on unauthorized foreign delivery workers from January to May, catching 734 foreign nationals—about 11 times the number recorded in all of 2025—and citing 16 delivery companies. Sixty-eight workers were ordered to leave the country, while 643 received fines.

The Justice Ministry has launched an internal investigation covering the employee and the regional enforcement team. It said receiving tips from companies is not itself improper, but exempting a company from enforcement in return would be problematic and could lead to disciplinary action.

Migrant-rights groups are demanding a broader investigation into immigration enforcement nationwide. They also warn that the foreign worker involved could face investigation and deportation without adequate legal assistance while responsibility for the alleged misconduct by immigration officials remains unresolved.
