Malaysian immigration detains 37 foreigners in major Johor Baru operation

Summary: On August 15, 2025, Malaysian immigration authorities in Johor Baru carried out raids, Ops Selera and Ops Sapu, leading to the arrest of 37 foreigners for immigration offences. Those detained included 23 Myanmar nationals, five Bangladeshis, and nine Indonesians, aged between 21 and 60. Violations included working without valid permits, overstaying, and misuse of social visit passes. Two tried to escape but were caught, and a local man was also arrested for harbouring them. Six individuals were issued notices to assist investigations, and all detainees were placed at the Setia Tropika Immigration Depot. The operation was based on public complaints, and authorities stressed continued strict enforcement while encouraging eligible foreigners to return home voluntarily under the Migrant Repatriation Programme 2.0, running until April 30, 2026.
