According to the European Union Agency for Asylum, EU member states, Switzerland and Norway received about 332,000 asylum applications in the first half of 2026, down 17% from the same period a year earlier and the lowest level in five years. The decline was linked to political changes in Syria and stronger EU cooperation with countries of origin and transit.

France received the most applications, followed by Italy, Spain and Germany, while Greece had the highest number per capita. At first instance, 31% of applicants were granted international protection. Recognition rates were especially high for nationals of Mali, Haiti and Afghanistan.

Afghans were the largest applicant group, followed by Venezuelans and Bangladeshis. The figures come shortly after the EU’s new Migration and Asylum Pact took effect on June 12, introducing mandatory border screening and faster asylum procedures.
