Summary
Thousands of migrants die or go missing each year while crossing the Mediterranean and Atlantic toward Europe, but the exact number is difficult to determine. Estimates vary widely between international organizations and NGOs because many deaths at sea go unrecorded.

From January 1 to February 23, 2026, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported at least 606 deaths or disappearances in the Mediterranean, the deadliest start to a year since 2014. However, NGOs estimate the number may be closer to 1,000.

Similar gaps exist on the Atlantic route to the Canary Islands: in 2024 the IOM counted 1,215 deaths, while an NGO estimated nearly 9,800. These differences highlight the challenge of counting migrants who vanish at sea without records or graves.
