The Albanese government is reportedly considering removing work rights from some temporary migrants applying for protection visas as part of efforts to reduce net overseas migration and address visa overstays. The proposal has not been formally announced but has prompted strong opposition from more than 160 human rights, charity, multicultural and migrant organizations.

The groups warn that most asylum seekers cannot access Centrelink benefits, meaning the loss of work rights could leave them unable to afford food, rent and other necessities. They argue this could push people into cash-in-hand employment and increase their vulnerability to wage theft, unsafe conditions, exploitation and abuse, while placing additional pressure on charities.

While acknowledging serious backlogs in Australia’s protection system, the organizations argue that the solution should be faster and better decision-making rather than restricting employment. They propose greater investment in initial assessments and adequately resourced review tribunals to create a protection system that is “fast, fair and effective.”

The debate comes as the government faces growing political pressure to reduce net migration and has also slowed the processing of working holiday visa applications.
