Australia’s three main right-leaning parties — the Liberals, Nationals, and Pauline Hanson’s One Nation — differ on immigration policy details but all view immigration as the dominant political issue this summer. One Nation is experiencing its strongest polling in history, with Senator Hanson drawing large crowds by warning of the dangers of “mass migration,” using rhetoric critics say borders on white nationalism. Her message appeals to some voters and even appears to have drawn former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce toward her movement, though it also triggers large counter-protests.

The Liberal Party, led by Sussan Ley, takes a more moderate stance, arguing that public frustration stems not from immigrants themselves but from the government’s failure to provide sufficient infrastructure amid rising population inflows. However, internal party tensions are growing as right-wing members push for tougher immigration controls, including stricter language and values requirements.

Nationals leader David Littleproud and shadow home affairs minister Jono Duniam have also suggested stronger tests for migrants, saying Australia must ensure newcomers respect national values and do not bring overseas conflicts or hatred with them.

The opposition plans to release its migration principles by the end of 2025. Currently, migrants must pass an entry test but are not required — unlike citizenship applicants — to sign an Australian Values Statement.
