Italy: Opposition criticizes new immigration bill

Summary
After the Italian government approved a new immigration bill on February 11, opposition parties criticized a provision that would limit lawmakers’ inspection powers at Repatriation Centres (CPRs). The draft would allow members of Parliament to enter the facilities without prior authorization, but restrict them to interviewing only those detainees who specifically request a meeting. Opposition lawmakers argue this would weaken oversight and make it harder to assess detention conditions.
The opposition has called the measure a serious issue and demanded its removal or revision when the bill reaches Parliament. The Interior Ministry, however, denies that parliamentary powers are being restricted and says the provision simply clarifies rules about accompanying staff.
The ruling coalition supports the bill as part of a broader crackdown on irregular immigration, describing it as consistent with European rules. The package also includes measures to implement the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has urged Parliament to pass the legislation quickly, while the opposition continues to warn that it could reduce transparency at detention centers.
