NWT advocacy leads to increase in Immigration Nominee Program spaces
Release Date
2025-09-02
Media
Government of Northwest Territories
Summary
In 2025, the Northwest Territories (NWT) will receive an increase of 47 additional nominee spaces through the Northwest Territories Nominee Program (NTNP), bringing the total to 197. While this does not fully restore the territory’s allocation to 2024 levels—which had been cut in half by the previous federal government—the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) welcomes the increase and will continue advocating for allocations that reflect the North’s unique needs.
This decision follows sustained GNWT advocacy, including Minister Caitlin Cleveland’s recent meetings with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in Ottawa. The additional spaces will be used for eligible applicants from the second 2025 intake who were not initially selected, and applicants will be assessed based on the expiry date of their work permits. There will be no new intake for 2025.
The NTNP is a vital part of the GNWT’s workforce and population strategy. Immigration in the North is seen not only as an economic tool but also as a matter of sovereignty and community resilience. Minister Cleveland emphasized that immigration strengthens the NWT economy, supports industry diversification, and contributes to nation-building in the North.
