Summary
The University of North Dakota has launched an Immigration Law Clinic in Grand Forks to both give students hands-on experience and help ease the state’s severe labor shortage. Funded with $400,000 over two years, the clinic will provide free legal assistance while training 8–10 students per semester in skills such as trial practice, client interviews, and case analysis.

Professor Erick Resek, who oversees the clinic, emphasized that immigration strengthens local economies, as immigrants work legally, pay taxes, and start businesses. He also hopes the program will encourage some graduates to stay in North Dakota and practice immigration law, addressing the shortage of attorneys in the field.

Resek described current U.S. immigration law as “chaos,” citing long delays, insufficient visas, outdated laws, and fraudulent services targeting immigrants. Despite these challenges, he is committed to giving students valuable opportunities and noted strong student interest. Grand Forks’ growing immigrant community, drawn by low living costs, safety, and job opportunities, further underscores the clinic’s importance.
