Summary
Newly released data from the University of California, Berkeley’s Deportation Data Project shows that more than one-third of the roughly 220,000 people arrested by ICE in the first nine months of the Trump administration had no criminal history. This contradicts the administration’s repeated claims that enforcement efforts were focused on “the worst of the worst,” such as violent offenders and gang members.

The data, covering Jan. 20 to Oct. 15, reveals that nearly 75,000 non-criminal immigrants were arrested. For those with criminal histories, the dataset does not distinguish between minor and serious offenses. It also excludes Border Patrol operations, which have intensified in cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, and Charlotte, and whose arrest numbers remain largely unknown.

Despite pressure from White House adviser Stephen Miller for ICE to arrest 3,000 migrants per day, ICE averaged only 824 daily arrests—still more than double the daily average under the Biden administration in 2024 (312). About 90% of those arrested were men, with Mexican nationals making up the largest group (85,000), followed by Guatemalans (31,000) and Hondurans (24,000). Over 60% were between ages 25 and 45, contributing to labor shortages in industries reliant on migrant workers.

It remains unclear how many arrests led to deportations, though 22,959 individuals are listed as having voluntarily departed the U.S. ICE is currently detaining around 65,000 migrants in facilities nationwide.
