Balearic Islands, new critical route for irregular immigration in Europe
Release Date
2025-08-22
Media

Summary
The Balearic Islands are facing record migration from Algeria, with over 4,700 arrivals so far in 2025—a 77% increase compared to 2024. Reception facilities, particularly in Ibiza and Formentera, are overwhelmed, and new centers have yet to open.
Balearic President Marga Prohens warned that this has become Europe’s fastest-growing migration route and urged the Spanish government and the EU to urgently deploy Frontex and strengthen cooperation with Algeria to prevent a humanitarian crisis.
In the past 20 days alone, 1,500 people have arrived, making the Balearic Islands Spain’s main entry point for irregular migration. Meanwhile, arrivals in the Canary Islands and on the mainland have decreased. A meeting with the EU Home Affairs Commissioner is scheduled for late September to address the crisis.
