Summary: A record influx of around 60,000 migrants from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta has intensified tensions within the European Union over migration policy. Italy and Denmark called for Spain to be suspended from the Schengen Area, while Spain requested an emergency meeting of EU interior ministers and said that almost all of the migrants had already been returned to Morocco. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed that protecting the EU’s external borders is a shared responsibility. Migration expert Camille Le Coz argued that far-right parties have exploited the images from Ceuta to portray Europe as being “under attack,” despite Spain’s rapid cooperation with Morocco to manage the situation. She said the EU is divided between countries seeking tougher measures, such as expanded return hubs, and Spain, which favors stronger partnerships with neighboring countries. Le Coz also described Italy’s temporary suspension of Schengen arrangements with Spain as largely political, noting that no migrants from Ceuta had reached mainland Spain.
