Demonizing foreign students sidesteps solutions to Canada’s problems

Summary
In 2024, international students in Canada have been scapegoated for the country's economic challenges, including job shortages, housing costs, and pressure on healthcare. A cap on international student numbers was introduced in January, and political figures have linked international students to an increase in asylum claims. However, data shows that international students contribute only a small percentage of the asylum backlog—ranging from 11% to 16% in recent years—and represent only 1.94% of all study permit holders who apply for asylum.
Blaming international students has led to increased racism and violence against them, particularly South Asians. This rhetoric overlooks the positive contributions of international students and exacerbates discrimination and exploitation. It also distracts from addressing Canada's systemic issues in healthcare, housing, and education. By focusing on immigration, politicians avoid tackling the root causes of these problems. The negative impact of scapegoating is real, as it can harm international students and delay solutions to Canada's most pressing challenges.
