Summary
Effective Oct. 1, 2026, Japan will introduce revised fees for residence status changes, extensions of stay, and permanent residence applications. The new fees will apply only to applications filed on or after that date, while applications submitted by Sept. 30 will remain subject to the current fee schedule. Online applications may receive lower fees in certain cases.

Online applicants will be required to pay fees through convenience stores or bank transfers, including internet banking, while credit cards and QR-code payments will not be accepted. In-person applicants will continue to use revenue stamps. Applicants facing serious financial hardship may qualify for fee reductions, while certain diplomatic, official, and designated activity categories may be exempt. Requests for fee reductions must be filed in person and cannot be made through the online application system.
