Summary
The 98th Academy Awards highlight the significant role immigrants continue to play in the U.S. film industry. Two leading films, Sinners and Hamnet, have received many nominations, and immigrants are strongly represented among this year’s nominees.

Out of 125 total nominations, 22 (about 17.6%) went to immigrants, a higher proportion than their share of the U.S. film industry workforce (11.2%). Among the 10 most-nominated films, about 28.8% of the nominations went to immigrants or the children of immigrants.

Immigrants from 17 different countries were nominated across many categories, including acting, directing, music, costume design, visual effects, and sound. For example, Sinners includes several nominations connected to immigrant artists, while Hamnet features Chinese-American filmmaker Chloé Zhao among its nominees.

This strong presence reflects a long-standing pattern. Since the early days of Hollywood, immigrants have played a central role in building the industry. Many of the major studios—including Paramount, Universal, 20th Century Fox, MGM, and Warner Bros.—were founded by immigrants in the early 20th century.

More than a century later, immigrants continue to shape Hollywood by contributing talent, creative vision, and global perspectives that influence the stories films tell and the audiences they reach.
