Summary
Japan’s justice minister announced that the government will flexibly grant visa extensions to Iranian nationals in Japan who hold short-term visas, if they request it. The measure is being considered because U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran have made returning home difficult, with flight suspensions and airport closures affecting travel.

During a House of Representatives budget committee session, Justice Minister Hiroshi Hiraguchi said immigration authorities were instructed to handle applications from Iranian citizens with consideration.

According to Immigration Services Agency data, about 4,700 Iranians lived in Japan as of June 2025.

The policy discussion follows Japan’s earlier emergency measures for Myanmar nationals after the 2021 military coup, which allowed them to extend their residency and work permits. When asked whether Iranians should receive similar treatment, the minister said the idea should be considered.
