Summary
Germany has decided to extend internal Schengen border controls at all nine of its land borders until 15 September 2026, continuing measures first introduced in September 2024 to combat irregular migration, people smuggling, and organized crime. Between September 2024 and December 2025, about 67,000 irregular crossings were detected and 46,000 people were denied entry, while asylum applications fell by nearly 50% year-on-year.

The controls apply to borders with France, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. Although checks are risk-based and not constant, they have increased border waiting times by 15–30 minutes, affecting logistics and travel schedules.

Travelers are advised to carry passports even within the Schengen Area and allow extra travel time. While repeated extensions raise concerns about compliance with Schengen rules, EU officials consider formal action unlikely because migration remains a major political issue.
