Summary
A man shot by federal immigration officers in Minneapolis on Saturday morning has died, according to federal and local authorities. The shooting occurred around 9 a.m. on the city’s South Side during a targeted federal operation. The Department of Homeland Security said agents were pursuing a man it described as undocumented, armed, and wanted for “violent assault,” when another individual approached agents carrying a 9mm handgun. DHS said officers tried to disarm him, he resisted, and an agent fired “defensive shots,” calling it an apparent attempt to inflict maximum harm on law enforcement. DHS did not identify the person killed.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, however, said the victim was a 37-year-old white Minneapolis resident believed to be a U.S. citizen, with no significant police history beyond traffic tickets, and likely a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry. He said the man was shot multiple times—possibly by more than one federal officer—and later died at Hennepin County Medical Center. The incident is reported to be the third shooting involving federal immigration agents in Minneapolis this year. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz condemned the operation and urged President Trump to end it immediately.
