US immigration memo outlines expanded deportation to third countries

Under the new policy, migrants usually get 24 hours’ notice, but in urgent situations, deportation can occur after just six hours. If migrants express fear, they will receive a screening within 24 hours to determine eligibility for protection under U.S. law and the Convention Against Torture.

Immigration advocates and attorneys warn that the policy puts thousands at risk of persecution or torture and fails to provide adequate time or legal access to challenge removals. Critics argue that the brief notice window and lack of safety guarantees may lead to life-threatening outcomes.

The Department of Homeland Security has not disclosed how many people might be affected.
