Students, immigration attorneys worry about pause on student visa appointments
Release Date

Summary
The U.S. State Department has temporarily paused the scheduling of new student visa appointments to implement expanded screening of applicants' social media activity. While current visa holders and those with scheduled appointments are not affected, the pause has caused concern among international students.
Natalia Titevalova, a Russian student studying English in Los Angeles, expressed worry about the impact on her friends and future plans. Her immigration attorney, Jacob Sapochnick, warned that the increased vetting may lead to arbitrary denials and could prevent many students from arriving in time for the fall semester.
Sapochnick also noted that this uncertainty may push prospective students to choose alternative study destinations like Canada, Australia, or Europe, resulting in a loss of talent for the U.S. The duration of the visa appointment pause remains unknown.
