The Administrative Review Tribunal
Summary
From 1 November 2026, Australia requires an upfront fee of AUD 1,863.50 for applications seeking review of protection visa refusals, cancellations, or decisions under section 197D of the Migration Act. The change follows amendments to the Migration Regulations 1994. Applicants in immigration detention and those whose applications are combined with an already-paid application may be exempt.

The fee is fully refunded if the review succeeds or the application is deemed invalid. Refunds following withdrawal are strictly limited. Online applications started but not submitted before 1 November must be restarted under the new fee rules. For reviews lodged before that date, fees generally apply only if the review is unsuccessful, with payment due within seven days of receiving an invoice.
