Summary
Japan's Muslim population has grown to about 420,000 people, but the 2025 opposition to a mosque project in Fujisawa revealed a rise in organised anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant sentiment. Although Muslim communities have long contributed to local society through community services and cultural exchange, misinformation on social media and political rhetoric fueled strong local resistance.

The article argues that local governments are being left to manage increasingly complex migration issues without sufficient national guidance or resources. As Japan becomes more diverse, it calls for a coherent national immigration policy that recognizes immigrants as part of society, strengthens support for local governments, promotes multicultural coexistence, and more effectively counters hate speech and misinformation.
