(Australian Human Rights Commission)Impacts of parental immigration detention and deportation on children and young people revealed in new national report

Australian Human Rights Commission
Summary
A report released by the University of Sydney and the Australian Human Rights Commission finds that immigration detention and deportation have serious and lasting impacts on children whose parents or caregivers are detained or removed. Based on 104 interviews and 105 survey responses, the study documents family separation, emotional distress, financial hardship, and disruptions to education, with many children taking on adult responsibilities at a young age.
The report argues that the consequences of immigration enforcement extend far beyond the individuals directly affected, creating a “ripple effect of suffering” for entire families. It calls for greater support for affected children and urges policymakers to incorporate children's perspectives into future immigration, detention, and deportation policies.
