Summary
A recent study by ICS ULisboa found that most Portuguese citizens view immigration positively from an economic perspective. Sixty-five percent of respondents said that immigrants are beneficial to Portugal’s economy, while only 14 percent believed immigration harms it. Public confidence in the economic contribution of immigrants has increased compared with previous surveys. The share of people who do not believe immigrants take jobs from Portuguese citizens also rose to 52 percent, and half of respondents rejected the idea that immigrants are reducing access to public services.

At the same time, many Portuguese still support giving hiring priority to citizens when jobs are scarce, with 73 percent expressing this view. The survey also found that more people reject the claim that Portugal would be stronger if immigration stopped than support it. Despite ongoing political debates over immigration, respondents ranked migration and border control only sixth among the country’s most important political issues. Economic concerns such as the cost of living, inflation, pensions, and low wages were considered the most pressing problems, followed by corruption and healthcare.
