Summary
In 2025, Switzerland experienced a significant demographic shift as the population aged 65 and over exceeded those under 20 for the first time, highlighting ongoing population aging. The total population reached about 9.12 million, increasing by 0.8% year on year, though growth slowed compared to 2024.
Birth rates continued to decline, with a fertility rate of 1.28, while the number of deaths remained largely stable. Life expectancy is projected to reach 86.3 years for women and 82.7 years for men.
Marriage and divorce numbers both decreased, with projections suggesting that nearly 39% of marriages may eventually end in divorce.
Immigration trends also shifted, with foreign immigration declining and total immigration falling by 3.8% to around 204,600. Overall, despite continued population growth, Switzerland faces slower growth and increasing aging due to declining births and reduced immigration.
