Summary
The UK House of Commons Home Affairs Select Committee plans to run “citizens’ assembly”-style deliberative workshops on immigration in 2026 to understand the public’s considered views and identify areas of consensus.

Around 105 residents (35 in each location) in Leicester, North Tyneside and Renfrewshire will take part in three weekend events over the coming months. Participants will be recruited to reflect local populations (including demographic mix and views on immigration), will be paid for their time, and will have travel costs covered; there will be no open application process.

Delivered with partners Demos and King’s College London, the sessions will provide balanced expert information and facilitated discussions so people with different perspectives can weigh trade-offs—especially between reducing legal/net migration and meeting workforce needs while pursuing economic growth. The committee will use the outcomes to inform its scrutiny of government immigration policy throughout the Parliament.
