Summary
Japan’s government is preparing to hold a ministerial meeting to coordinate policies concerning foreign nationals. The new role of Minister in Charge of a Society of Harmonious Coexistence with Foreign Nationals has been assigned to Economic Security Minister Onoda Kimi, and the meeting will be chaired by Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara Minoru.

The discussions will cover tightening immigration controls, reviewing foreign land ownership rules, and addressing overtourism. The move follows concerns that some foreign nationals are violating laws or local rules, which Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae said has caused unease among Japanese citizens.

While emphasizing that the government opposes xenophobia, Takaichi stated it will respond firmly to rule-breaking. A basic policy package is expected by January after consulting experts.
