Government to seize millions from fake immigration ‘lawyers’

Summary: The UK Home Office announced new powers allowing the Immigration Advice Authority (IAA) to confiscate illegal profits from fraudulent immigration advisers under the Proceeds of Crime Act. These measures aim to stop rogue advisers who exploit migrants for money and offer unlawful immigration advice.

For the first time, the IAA will be able to trace, freeze, and recover illicit earnings without relying on police assistance. The seized funds will be reinvested in border security and policing, including the Multi-Agency Cash Cell, which targets criminal finances at the border.

Some fake immigration lawyers have made huge sums—one earned over £500,000, while another group pocketed more than £3 million. The new powers will allow the IAA to recover such funds more quickly and efficiently.

Security Minister Dan Jarvis said the move ensures that “rogue immigration advisers exploiting our system will pay the price,” emphasizing that the money recovered will help strengthen borders and public safety.

The proposals are open for public consultation until the end of the year. Additionally, under the upcoming Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill, anyone posing as an immigration lawyer could face fines of up to £15,000.

The government also noted that over 35,000 people with no legal right to remain in the UK have been returned, and cooperation with France is increasing to expand migrant returns. The Home Office reaffirmed its firm stance on cracking down on illegal migration.
