UK plans compulsory digital ID as populist pressure over immigration rises

Summary
The UK government has announced plans to introduce a digital ID system as part of efforts to curb illegal immigration. The digital ID, stored on smartphones, will include personal details such as name, date of birth, photo, nationality, and residency status, and will be mandatory for proving the right to work. It is also expected to simplify applications for services like welfare and licenses.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the system would make illegal work harder and strengthen border security. However, opposition parties and critics warn it could infringe on civil liberties. The Liberal Democrats, Conservatives, and Reform UK have all voiced opposition, with Nigel Farage calling it a tool for state control.
While a similar ID card plan under Tony Blair was scrapped, rising public concern over immigration has shifted opinion, with recent polls showing majority support. Still, over 575,000 people have signed a petition against the move, reflecting ongoing controversy.
