Immigration opposition fuels English national flag frenzy

Summary
Flags of St George and the Union Jack are being widely displayed across England, far beyond traditional royal events or sporting occasions. While supporters describe it as a patriotic movement, critics highlight its links to anti-immigration sentiment and far-right groups such as “Operation Raise the Colours,” reportedly connected to figures like Tommy Robinson. Organizers claim up to a million flags have been raised, though this figure is unverified.
The campaign coincides with growing unrest over irregular immigration, including protests outside hotels housing asylum seekers. Analysts note that while the English flag gained broader acceptance in the 1990s as a symbol of sport and cultural pride, it has long carried associations with extremism. The current surge reflects public frustration with immigration policy and the rise of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party, which is topping polls despite no election until 2029.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has expressed pride in flying the national flags but warned against their use for divisive purposes. Similar tensions have also emerged in Ireland, where flag displays in immigrant-heavy districts have provoked disputes.
