Economists welcome rise in foreign workers in Japan: Nikkei survey
Release Date

Summary
A July 2024 survey by Nikkei and the Japan Center for Economic Research asked 47 economists about the impact of increasing the number of foreign residents in Japan. Most respondents believed that more foreign workers, particularly young ones, would help ease labor shortages, boost tax revenues, and strengthen the fiscal balance through social insurance contributions. They also expected such an increase to improve living standards for Japanese citizens by reducing shortages of goods and services and containing price rises. As of the end of 2023, Japan had about 3.7 million foreign residents, 11% more than the previous year. While many see foreign workers as essential for economic growth, concerns remain over possible job competition and effects on civic order, leading experts to emphasize the importance of creating institutional support for foreign residents, including provisions for their needs as they age.
