Immigration and deprivation causing UK public to lose faith in politicians, says Rayner

Summary
UK Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has warned that immigration, poverty, economic insecurity, and social isolation are key factors driving public dissatisfaction with the government, leading to unrest and riots. Speaking at a cabinet meeting, she emphasized that 17 of the 18 areas hit hardest by last summer’s riots were among the country’s most deprived.
Rayner also cited increased time spent alone and online, rapid de-industrialization, and declining trust in institutions as contributing to social breakdown. Her long-term “Plan for Neighbourhoods” aims to invest £1.5 billion in 75 areas over the next decade to improve social cohesion.
Concerns are rising over the potential for renewed unrest, especially around asylum hotels targeted by protests, some incited by far-right figures like Tommy Robinson. Labour leader Keir Starmer's team acknowledged that high immigration and the cost-of-living crisis have strained the UK’s social fabric.
Government officials insist the response is not politically motivated but part of a broader effort to rebuild trust and unity in communities. A cross-party Independent Commission on Community and Cohesion has also begun work to address these deep-rooted issues.
