Arrests as immigration raids target workers
Release Date
2025-07-19
Media
BBC
Summary
Over 20 people were arrested in immigration raids across the West Midlands, targeting delivery drivers suspected of illegal work in Birmingham, Coventry, and Hereford. The operation focused on workers in the gig economy, including those using modified e-bikes, as well as in sectors like car washes, construction sites, and nail salons.
During the two-day crackdown, 21 foreign nationals from countries such as Eritrea, Guinea, Italy, India, Pakistan, Vietnam, and Bangladesh were detained and now face deportation.
Matthew Foster, the West Midlands immigration lead, emphasized that illegal work undermines legitimate businesses and exploits vulnerable people, warning that those breaking the law will face consequences.
The government has prioritized tackling illegal immigration and is pressuring food delivery companies like Deliveroo, Uber Eats, and Just Eat to strengthen security checks after reports of asylum seekers working illegally as couriers.
