Immigration Bill further whammy for under pressure social care warns KCC Leader

Kent County Council
Summary
Kent County Council (KCC) leaders have sent a letter to the UK Home Secretary and Minister for Care expressing serious concerns over the sudden decision to abolish the Social Care Worker Visa for new applicants from July 22, 2025. They argue the change was made without formal consultation with the social care sector and will severely impact workforce sustainability.
Currently, 20–25% of KCC’s adult social care workforce consists of overseas workers. The removal of this visa route, combined with recent changes to employer National Insurance contributions and future salary requirements (£41,000/year for care workers), places unsustainable financial and operational pressure on care providers. Many workers may be forced to leave the UK, leaving providers “on a cliff edge.”
KCC warns this national policy shift could have long-term negative effects on service delivery and urges the government to reconsider the changes and provide support to mitigate risks to the adult social care system.
