Submit Skilled Worker applications now ahead of Immigration White Paper changes

In May 2025, the UK government published a White Paper outlining major reforms to its immigration system, with a strong focus on reducing net migration. One of the key areas targeted for imminent change is the Skilled Worker route. Given the expected updates to the Immigration Rules within weeks, applicants are strongly advised to submit any Skilled Worker applications — including entry clearance, switching, and extensions — as soon as possible.

The proposed changes could significantly tighten eligibility, including raising the required skill level from RQF Level 3 to Level 6, increasing salary thresholds, and removing certain roles such as care workers from initial entry eligibility. English language requirements are also set to increase for both main applicants and adult dependants, and the Immigration Skills Charge will rise by 32%.

Crucially, the government may offer little to no transitional provisions for new applicants unless they already have a Certificate of Sponsorship issued before the new rules are implemented. Therefore, delaying applications risks becoming ineligible under the new criteria.

Further measures, such as requiring workforce strategies for certain sectors, are under consideration but are expected to follow later after consultation. Early action is therefore essential to mitigate the impact of these sweeping reforms.
