Care boss 'really worried' over immigration plans
Release Date

Media

Summary
The UK government's plan to ban the recruitment of overseas care workers as part of efforts to reduce net migration has raised serious concerns among care providers.
Julia Senah, who runs Almond Care in Nuneaton, said she is "incredibly worried" about the policy, as over 80% of her 130 staff members are foreign nationals. She noted that despite advertising widely, few British people applied for care jobs, which led her to recruit from abroad.
Care workers like Dina and Margaret, both from Zimbabwe, expressed concern about the impact on the workforce. Dina highlighted that many migrants are reliable and experienced, warning that banning overseas recruitment will increase burnout among current staff. Margaret emphasized that the UK has helped her grow professionally and that others should have similar opportunities.
While the government claims higher pay in social care will boost domestic recruitment, Senah remains skeptical, stating that even with better wages, British workers are generally not interested in care roles.
