US may soon deport migrants to Libya - reports

Summary: The U.S. may soon begin deporting migrants to Libya, according to two anonymous officials speaking to CBS News. Deportations could start as early as this week using military aircraft. The plan is controversial, as Libya remains unstable due to ongoing conflict, with the U.S. State Department advising against travel there.

Libya is reportedly one of several countries approached by the Trump administration for deportation agreements, along with Rwanda, Benin, Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini, and Moldova. It's unclear how many migrants would be sent to Libya or to which region.

Libya is divided between a UN-backed western government and an eastern region controlled by General Khalifa Haftar. Although Haftar’s son recently met with U.S. officials, deportations were not officially discussed.

Since returning to office, President Trump has intensified immigration enforcement, including offering $1,000 to undocumented migrants who voluntarily leave the U.S., and invoking a historic wartime law to justify deportation actions.
