Summary
As the number of foreign nationals in Japan hits a record high—nearly 3.8 million—foreigner associations are urging the government to better recognize their contributions and involve them in policymaking. At an April 16 event in Tokyo hosted by the Japan Association of Foreigners, panelists discussed the need for improved inclusion, protection of rights (especially for religious minorities like Muslims), and forums where foreign voices can be heard. Association president Oussouby Sacko criticized the view of foreigners as mere labor, while lawyer Shohei Sugita warned that immigration is driven by economic demand rather than clear policy. Although the government introduced a roadmap for integration in 2022, experts say it lacks long-term vision. Calls were made for political leadership to shape a more inclusive future and for foreign residents to engage in political change.
