Lack of immigration legal aid 'emotional torture'
Release Date

Media

Summary
A lack of immigration legal services in Wales is having serious consequences, including exploitation and long delays for asylum seekers, according to a report by the Bevan Foundation. Since 2018, 60% of immigration legal aid providers and offices in Wales have closed, leaving many people unable to find a solicitor or receive timely legal help.
Volunteers and legal professionals describe the system as “emotional torture,” with some asylum seekers waiting years—even up to seven years—for interviews or decisions. Yasmin, a volunteer and former asylum seeker, said people have lost hope due to the lack of support.
The legal aid system currently pays low, fixed fees that don’t reflect the actual workload, making it difficult to attract or retain lawyers in immigration law. The UK government has proposed a 30% increase in legal aid rates for immigration work, but experts say it may be too little, too late.
The Welsh government has provided some funding to support legal advice services, but both the Bevan Foundation and legal professionals are calling for more substantial action from both Welsh and UK governments to address the crisis and restore access to justice for migrants and asylum seekers.
