Summary: South Korea's digital nomad visa has been in effect for about a month, but updated rules have caused confusion among applicants. The Ministry of Justice clarified that the only major changes from the pilot program are lower income requirements for some applicants and an extension of the maximum stay from two to three years.

The visa is available to foreign nationals who own overseas businesses or work remotely for overseas companies. Freelancers may qualify only if they meet these conditions. Applicants must also have at least one year of work experience, and spouses and dependent children may accompany them.

The visa is issued for one year with multiple entries and may be renewed annually for up to three years. Applicants who qualify under lower income requirements by living outside Greater Seoul may later move to Seoul, but they must meet the higher income threshold when renewing their visa.

Losing a job does not automatically cancel the visa, but renewal requires continued eligibility. Holders are not allowed to work for Korean employers without changing to an appropriate visa. Tax obligations depend on the length of stay and applicable tax treaties.

After the three-year limit, the visa cannot be extended further. Those wishing to continue under the program must leave South Korea and apply for a new digital nomad visa.
