(Business Standard)Planning to move to Sweden? 'Good conduct' rules could affect PR permit
Release Date
2026-07-24
Media
Business Standard
Summary
Sweden introduced stricter **"good conduct"** requirements for residence permits on July 13, 2026. Immigration authorities can now refuse or revoke permits based not only on criminal convictions but also on repeated misconduct, such as providing false information, failing to meet tax or financial obligations, abusing welfare benefits, or maintaining links with criminal or extremist groups.
The rules mainly apply to work- and family-based residence permits outside EU law, while most EU-based permits and asylum cases are exempt. Although authorities say minor or isolated incidents will not normally affect applications, critics argue that the new law is too vague and could undermine legal certainty by allowing decisions based on non-criminal behavior.
