(Anadolu Ajansı)Swedish parliament backs tighter family immigration rules
Release Date

Summary
Sweden’s parliament has approved new rules tightening family immigration, effective October 1, 2026. Temporary residence permit holders will generally have to wait at least two years before qualifying for family reunification. Authorities will also reassess maintenance requirements when temporary permits are renewed, potentially affecting family members whose residence depends on the sponsor.
The reforms also address “teenage expulsions” by creating a new residence route for certain people under 21 who originally received permits as children but have since turned 18. The measures passed narrowly by 176–171. Separately, parliament approved lowering the age of criminal responsibility from 15 to 14.
