Trump suspends immigration from ‘Third World’, orders review of green cards

Following a shooting in Washington, DC, in which an Afghan national was identified as the suspect, President Donald Trump announced that the United States will “permanently pause migration from all Third World countries.” The announcement marks a major escalation in his administration’s immigration restrictions, coming shortly after he ordered a full re-examination of all green card applications from 19 “countries of concern.”

Trump stated that he will remove anyone who is “not a net asset” to the US, end all federal benefits for noncitizens, denaturalize migrants who undermine domestic stability, and deport any foreign national deemed a public charge, security risk, or “non-compatible with Western civilization.”

USCIS Director Joseph Edlow confirmed that, under Trump’s direction, the agency has begun a rigorous review of all green card applications from the 19 listed countries—which include Afghanistan, Iran, Myanmar, Venezuela, Yemen, and others. Afghan immigration requests have already been indefinitely suspended.

The shooting suspect, Rahmanaullah Lakanwal, came to the US under “Operation Allies Welcome” after aiding US forces in Afghanistan. Federal authorities, including the FBI, are now reviewing his vetting and immigration history.

The Trump administration has been tightening immigration policies across the board. It set the 2026 refugee cap at just 7,500—the lowest since 1980—and ordered a sweeping reassessment of roughly 200,000 refugees admitted under President Biden, also suspending their pending green card applications.
