(Notes From Poland)Poland calls for EU to deny residence to migrants who enter illegally

Notes From Poland
Summary
Following the recent migration crisis in Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta, Poland called on the European Union to adopt tougher immigration measures. At a special meeting of EU interior ministers, Poland proposed that migrants who enter the EU illegally should be barred from obtaining residence permits or permanent residency, arguing that migration must be treated as a security issue.
Poland cited its own experience with Belarus, which it accuses of using migration as a hybrid weapon against the EU. Since 2021, Poland has tightened asylum rules, strengthened border barriers, and increased border security. The government says these measures have significantly reduced illegal crossings, with no successful crossings recorded in the first half of 2026.
EU member states expressed solidarity with Spain and agreed on the need to strengthen external border protection, combat migrant smuggling, increase returns, and deepen cooperation with third countries. Poland argued that the Ceuta crisis demonstrates the limits of unrestricted access to asylum and supports a more restrictive EU migration policy.
