Union members approve work-based immigration

Summary
A union-commissioned survey conducted in September 2025 found strong support among members for work-based immigration, provided that Finnish working conditions are strictly upheld. A total of 87% of respondents agreed that accepting foreign workers is acceptable under this condition, while support declines if employment standards are weakened.
The survey also showed broad agreement that employers should be held more accountable for violating the employment conditions of foreign workers, with 86% in favor. The union is calling for stronger legislation to combat workplace exploitation and the grey economy, including the criminalisation of wage theft, arguing that current enforcement allows employers to avoid allow consequences.
Members also expressed concerns about the impact of work-based immigration on working conditions and unemployment. In response, the union emphasized the importance of maintaining labour availability assessments, which prioritize hiring workers from Finland and the EU/EEA before recruiting from outside the region.
