International student off-campus work hours officially increase to 24 hours/week

Summary
Effective November 8, 2024, new amendments to Canada's Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations allow full-time international students to work off-campus without needing a separate work permit. This change aims to help students offset living costs in Canada. However, to work part-time, students must meet several requirements, including being enrolled in a full-time program at a designated learning institution (DLI) and having a social insurance number (SIN). If any of these conditions are no longer met, students must stop working immediately.
Employers must verify that international students meet all eligibility criteria, as having a valid study permit alone is not enough to confirm legal status to work. Additionally, the amendments affect the eligibility for post-graduation work permits (PGWP). Students must remain enrolled at the DLI named on their study permit, and changing institutions requires a new permit. These changes aim to ensure study permits are granted only to students attending compliant institutions, with provisions for actions against non-compliant learning institutions.
