Status of Residence:
Skilled Worker

Overview

What is Skilled Worker?

The “Skilled Labor” residence status in Japan is granted to foreign nationals who engage in occupations that require specialized technical expertise or long-term practical experience. This visa does not cover general or unskilled labor but is instead intended for jobs that demand advanced abilities. Typical examples include foreign cuisine chefs, artisans in fields such as jewelry or fur processing, aircraft pilots, and professional sports instructors. These occupations are recognized as requiring a high level of training or significant professional experience and are therefore considered essential in Japan.

To qualify for this status, applicants must demonstrate certain levels of work experience or relevant certifications. For instance, foreign cuisine chefs are generally required to have at least 10 years of professional experience in their country of origin. Supporting documents such as resumes, letters of recommendation, and employment contracts must be submitted to prove the applicant’s skills and career background. The Immigration Services Agency carefully evaluates these documents to ensure that applicants possess the appropriate expertise for activities in Japan.

Another key characteristic of the “Skilled Labor” status is that it restricts employment to the specific field for which the visa was granted. In other words, foreign nationals are permitted to work only in the occupation directly related to their recognized skills, and activities outside that scope are not allowed. Therefore, if an individual changes employers or modifies the terms of employment, they must notify the Immigration Services Agency and undergo the appropriate procedures. By following the proper process, foreign nationals can maintain stable residence and successfully engage in skilled work in Japan.
